Radiology

The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida is an ACGME-accredited four year advanced program. We have five residents per year for a total of twenty residents.

Trainees will encounter a high volume and diverse array of both complex and frequently encountered pathology. Rotations include body imaging, chest and cardiac radiology, neuroradiology, breast imaging, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, musculoskeletal radiology and interventional radiology. In addition, during a 10-week rotation at Miami Children’s Hospital, residents gain exposure to complex neonatal and pediatric pathology.

Throughout their training, residents will receive daily didactic lectures in core topics. In addition, they engage in valuable discussions at multidisciplinary conferences concerning the role of imaging and image-guided interventions in clinical decision-making.

Curriculum

First year resident training consists of an introduction to all major modalities as well as instruction in the basic principles of radiologic physics and techniques.

After their first year of radiology training, residents attend a one-month course at the American Institute of Radiologic Pathology in Silver Spring, MD for which accommodation is provided.

Though all resident activities remain under faculty supervision and guidance, responsibility levels increase with individual development. Call shifts begin during the second year of radiology residency and continue throughout the rest of training.

In their fourth year of radiology training, residents will have the opportunity to customize mini-fellowship rotations based on career interests.

This is a four year program with five residents in each year of training, for a total of twenty residents. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

First year resident training consists of an introduction to general, alimentary and genitourinary radiology and instruction in the basic principles of radiologic physics and techniques, with progressive responsibility as they advance through the program.

During the second, third and fourth years, there are rotations in pediatric radiology at Miami Children’s Hospital; radiological pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C.; vascular interventional radiology, neuroradiology, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, ultrasonography and breast imaging.

The Nuclear Radiology program encompasses the clinical applications of instrumentation, performance of in vitro and organ visualization procedures, and production and use of radiodiagnostic and therapeutic compounds. Training includes lectures in theoretical physics, electrical engineering and nuclear instrumentation. Residents rotating through nuclear medicine are expected to participate in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of all patients.

Under the supervision of staff personnel, residents will be instructed in film interpretation of radiologic examinations in the areas of fluoroscopy, neuroradiology, ultrasonography, CT and MRI. Particular individual instruction will be given in the full range of vascular and interventional procedures. Responsibility will increase progressively with each year of education.

Supplementing the program are didactic lectures in basic subjects (e.g., radiation physics, radiation safety, fluoroscopy, etc.) and departmental conferences whereby residents discuss unknown cases and learn critical analysis.

In addition, there are interdepartmental conferences in which the Radiology Department plays a contributing role, including post graduate seminars at hotels located on Miami Beach and museum film conferences where interesting pathologically proven cases are presented. Experience in the evaluation and diagnosis of the abundant varied case material will be gained by each resident. At various times, residents will be able to attend radiological meetings, locally and nationally. Attendance to seminars and conferences is strongly encouraged.

Though all resident activities remain under the supervision and guidance of the staff, responsibility increases progressively parallel to individual development.

Our physicians are highly trained specialists in diagnostic radiology. They are all board certified by the American Board of Radiology and have additional training, either fellowship training in various areas of Diagnostic Radiology, or in subspecialties such as musculoskeletal, neurological, breast or nuclear imaging.

Chetan Rajadhyaksha, MD
Chairman of Radiology and Section Chief of Nuclear Imaging

Dr. Chetan Rajadhyaksha received his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA and medical degree from DY Patil Medical College, Bombay University, Mumbai, India. He completed his internship at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York, NY and a joint residency program in radiology at St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center and nuclear medicine at Harvard Medical School, where he was chief resident. He then came to Florida to complete an MRI fellowship in musculoskeletal, body and neurological imaging at University of Miami, where he also served as junior faculty. He is board certified by the American Board of Nuclear Medicine and the American Board of Radiology.

William F. Burke III, MD

Dr. William F. Burke is board certified with expertise in cardiovascular imaging, specifically coronary CTA and cardiovascular MRI. Dr. Burke received his undergraduate and medical doctor degrees from The Pennsylvania State University and Hershey Medical Center. He completed his internship at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Manhattan and diagnostic radiology residency at Hahnemann University Hospital/Drexel College of Medicine in Philadelphia. After completing a cardiovascular imaging fellowship, he confirmed his expertise in the latest cardiac imaging techniques by being awarded a certificate of Advanced Proficiency in cardiac CT by the American College of Radiology. His participation in numerous ongoing research studies keeps him on the forefront of this new and rapidly evolving field.

Stuart S. Kaplan, MD
Section Chief of Breast Imaging

Dr. Stuart Kaplan, Section Chief of Breast Imaging, brings more than 15 years experience in breast imaging to the hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Center, which is dedicated to detecting, treating and preventing breast cancer. A graduate of George Washington University School of Medicine, he completed his radiology residency at the University of California, Los Angeles and fellowship at the Iris Cantor Center for Breast Imaging at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Luciano Mastrogiovanni, MD
Section Chief of Body Imaging

Dr. Luciano Mastrogiovanni, board certified in Radiology, is an attending radiologist in Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Department of Radiology, with a specialty in Body Imaginng. Dr. Mastrogiovanni received his medical degree from Universidad Nacional de Rosario, in Argentina. After completing his internship at Metropolitan Hospital in New York, he moved to New Orleans, to start his residency in Diagnostic Radiology. Unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina devastated his training hospital and residency program there, but he was able to move back to New York and complete an excellent training at Jacobi Medical Center Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He was accepted for fellowship at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY, where he received exquisite training in body imaging.

Katrina Rabinovich, MD

Dr. Katrina Rabinovich’s specialty is women’s imaging, including mammography, breast MRI and a full range of interventional breast procedures, as well as gynecologic ultrasound and MRI. Dr. Rabinovich received her Medical Degree from University of Tennessee College of Medicine, her radiology residency at the University of Tennessee Methodist Hospital and completed her fellowship in women’s imaging at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Ivy Salom, MD
Section Chief of Ultrasound Imaging

Dr. Ivy Salom is a board certified radiologist with a sub-specialty in breast imaging which includes, mammography, breast ultrasound and MRI, as well as, breast interventional procedures. Dr. Salom earned her medical degree in 1997 from the University of Havana School of Medicine in Cuba. She went on to complete her transitional year internship at San Juan City Hospital and a diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Dr. Salom furthered her post graduate training as a fellow in breast imaging at Mount Sinai’s Comprehensive Breast Center in Miami Beach, Florida.

Vinay Bhatia, MD
Section Chief of Diagnostic Neuroradiology and Radiology Residency Associated Program Director

Dr. Vinay Bhatia earned his medical degree in 2010 at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed his diagnostic radiology residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he served as the radiology chief resident, followed by a neuroradiology fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist Health in North Carolina.

Vivek Sindhwani, MD

Dr. Sindhwani earned his medical degree and completed his residency at Seth G.S.Medical College & King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India. He completed fellowships in pediatric radiology at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney, Australia, and two fellowships in neuroradiology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and at the University of Missouri. He also completed a research fellowship in abdominal imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital.

David T. Wymer, MD

Dr. Wymer earned his medical degree at University of Florida College of Medicine. He completed his residency in radiology and fellowship in nuclear medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He also completed an MRI fellowship in body and musculoskeletal imaging at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. He is a board member of the Nuclear Medicine Resident Organization of the American College of Nuclear Medicine. He has authored and contributed to publications and book chapters on topics such as metastatic breast cancer, pulmonary edema, and multimodality imaging. Dr. Wymer has also served as a reviewer for the European Journal of Radiology, Abdominal Radiology, and RadioGraphics.

James S. Toby, MD, FRCPC

Dr. James Toby is a board-certified radiologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in both Nuclear Medicine and Radiology. He earned his medical degree at Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University, completed a general surgery internship at Mount Sinai West and Columbia University, and a residency in Molecular Imaging and Therapy at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY where he served as chief resident. He also completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at Albany Medical Center, holds advanced certificates of proficiency in Body CT and MRI imaging from the American College of Radiology and has completed training in Cardiac CT through the University of Toronto. Dr. Toby is a member of the American Board of Radiology, American Board of Nuclear Medicine, Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and American College of Radiology and has served as a reviewer for the Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

Viky S. Loescher, MD
Chief, Section of Cardiovascular Imaging

Dr. Viky Loescher is a radiologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Loescher earned her medical degree at San Marcos National University, Dean of America, Peru. She completed her residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, and her specialty in Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging at Brigham & Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. She is a member of the American Roentgen Ray Society, Radiological Society of North America, American Heart Association, and American Medical Association. She has contributed to many presentations and publications, including Circulation, Research Circulation, Journal of Atrial Fibrillation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and others. Dr. Loescher has also authored chapters on topics that include arterial disorders, thrombolysis and thrombectomy, and cardiac regeneration.

Nirav B. Joshi, MD
Chief, Section of Musculoskeletal Radiology

Dr. Nirav Joshi is a board-certified radiologist. Dr. Joshi earned his medical degree at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, and completed a fellowship in musculoskeletal imaging at Emory University in Atlanta. He is a member of the American College of Radiology and American Medical Association and has earned several awards, including most recently Attending of the Year at Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2022 and Fellow of the Year at Emory University in 2021. Dr. Joshi has also conducted sport medicine research at University of California, Los Angeles, and University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and has many presentations and contributed to publications on topics such as knee laxity and stiffness, ACL reconstruction, and the effects of MRIs.

Kunal M. Patel, MD, MS

Dr. Kunal Patel is a neuroradiologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Patel earned his medical degree at the American University of Antigua College of Medicine and completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship in neuroradiology at Northwestern University Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Patel has been a member of many professional societies such as the American Society of Neuroradiology, American Society of Head and Neck Radiology, American Roentgen Ray Society, and American Society of Spine Radiology. Dr. Patel has also contributed to publications and abstracts on topics such as Meckel’s diverticulum, normal pressure hydrocephalus, and acute limb ischemia.

Kitty Daniel, DO, MS, MPH

Dr. Kitty Daniel is a radiologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Daniel earned her medical degree and Master of Public Health from Nova Southeastern University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, FL, where she was President of the American Medical Association (NSU local chapter). She also earned her Master of Science in Applied Anatomy from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Daniel completed her diagnostic radiology residency and breast imaging fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, FL. Dr. Daniel has contributed to radiology-related research, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations. She was recently involved in an Educational RSNA Exhibit that focused on the review of uncommon breast pathologies, and a Quality Improvement Project, where she developed the master manual for the mammography reporting system. She is fluent in English and Hungarian.

Mount Sinai Medical Center offers a one-year fellowship in breast imaging for residency-trained, board certified or board eligible radiologists. The fellowship experience takes place at the Breast Center, located in Mount Sinai’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI designated Community Clinical Oncology Program, adjacent to the main campus of the hospital.

The breast imaging fellow participates in all aspects of breast imaging, including interpretation of screening and diagnostic digital mammography and 3D/Tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound and breast MRI. In addition, under the supervision of the attending radiologists, the breast imaging fellow performs interventional procedures in the Breast Center, including ultrasound-guided cyst aspirations, fine needle aspirations and core biopsies, stereotactic core biopsies, MRI-guided core biopsies, preoperative needle localizations, sentinel node injections and galactograms.

The breast imaging fellow participates in and prepares presentations for multi-disciplinary conferences, including the weekly Breast conference (attended by all Breast Cancer related specialties) and the bi-weekly breast radiology/pathology conference.

Teaching is an important component of the fellowship, as Mount Sinai radiology residents rotate thorough the department on a regular basis. In addition, the fellowship affords the opportunity to participate in clinical research, which is strongly emphasized as a component of the Mount Sinai Department of Radiology.
