Hospice & Palliative Medicine Los Angeles Medical Center

The Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship program is a one-year clinical program aimed at training physicians from a variety of medical specialties in the care of seriously ill patients and their families. Our fellows care for patients across the care continuum through multi-setting, interdisciplinary, team-based care. Kaiser Permanente’s fully integrated electronic medical records system allows our fellows the unique opportunity to follow their patients across these multiple clinical settings, from the inpatient consult service to the outpatient clinic to our integrated home-based palliative care and hospice programs. As a fellow you will have unparalleled continuity of care that is rarely seen in other medical systems.

Diversity is another cornerstone of our program. Los Angeles is one of the most diverse and vibrant cities in the nation, which means that our fellows encounter patients with a wide range of cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Our fellows rotate through four different medical centers, each with a unique culture and patient population. In addition, Kaiser Permanente LAMC offers over 20 other residency and fellowship programs that provide stimulating interaction and exchange among fellow residents and faculty physicians. Our fellows benefit from a large and diverse faculty of 22 physicians, many of whom with dual certifications in Palliative Medicine and Geriatrics, who have a passion for teaching and mentorship. Our fellowship program has close affiliations and collaborations with the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program, the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine and Kaiser Permanente Research.

Fellowship Program Mission:

• To train proficient clinician leaders and educators in providing specialized, evidence-based, whole- person care in all palliative care settings. Our graduates have become fellowship directors, medical directors, and leaders in education and care delivery.
• To provide a robust educational experience across the continuum of serious illness. Our fellows are equipped to practice palliative medicine in any palliative setting of their choice, including inpatient, home-based palliative, hospice, clinic and post-acute.
• To familiarize our learners with a diverse range of illnesses and healthcare systems, including a tertiary, academic hospital (Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center), a community-based hospital (Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center), a children’s hospital (Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles) and a comprehensive cancer center (City of Hope Cancer Hospital).
