Vascular Neurology Fellowship

Program Overview from the Fellowship Director, Michael J. Schneck, MD

A one-year ACGME approved Vascular Neurology Fellowship program in the Department of Neurology at Loyola Medicine has been available to qualified applicants since July 1, 2006. Loyola Medicine's Vascular Neurology Fellowship program currently participates in the formal recruiting process through ERAS MATCH.

Fellows participate in the evaluation and management of patients on an active inpatient stroked unit and a 13-bed (non-trauma) neurointensive care unit (NICU), as well as special interdisciplinary consultative rounds (adult and pediatric) and outpatient clinics. Exposure to neuroradiology and endovascular stroke care is included in the curriculum. In addition, neurosonology training is an integral part of the training program.

Loyola Medicine’s stroke specialists are nationally acclaimed for their success in treating stroke patients. Loyola Medicine's Vascular Neurology Fellowship program incorporates multidisciplinary and integrated approach, including faculty members from neurosurgery, neuroradiology and cardiology as well as neurointerventionalists.

Loyola Medicine's Stroke Center includes a nationally recognized team of experts in every facet of stroke-related care, including neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, emergency medicine, rehabilitative services and specialized neuroscience nursing.

The Stroke Center at Loyola Medicine has also been recognized by the American Stroke Association with its Get with the Guidelines® – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for our commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care. It is a fully JCAHO acredited comprehenisive stroke center.

Fellows will also participate in clinical trials and clinical research projects, weekly vascular neurology conferences, journal clubs and other educational activities.

Eligibility and Application Process

Applicants must be a:

  • Graduate of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or;
  • Graduate of medical schools in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association or;
  • Graduate of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who have received currently valid certification of Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Applicants must have a current valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States or Canada.

Applicants must be graduates of residency programs accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
