General Surgery Residency Program

Outstanding training, in service to Brooklyn's diverse patient population.

Welcome to the General Surgery residency program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. Our surgical program has a rich tradition of training numerous surgeons who have subsequently excelled in either the academic or the private sector. The residency is approved by the Residency Review Committee in Surgery to graduate eight residents each year.

Our program is dedicated to enhancing human lives by delivering the highest-quality patient-centered care, promoting clinical research and healthcare, and providing exceptional education for healthcare professionals. We strongly believe that by fostering a diverse, respectful, and inclusive training environment, we can help our trainees reach their full potential. Many of our graduates go on to secure highly competitive fellowship positions.

Residents receive comprehensive training in general surgery and its major subspecialties, which include bariatrics, minimally invasive surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, colorectal surgery, transplant surgery, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, and vascular surgery. Our high-volume level I trauma center provides unparalleled experience in trauma and critical care. Faculty are board-certified and specialty trained to provide expert, compassionate care in a construct of education, mentorship and partnership with Downstate Health Sciences University residents and students. Our trainees participate in all phases of patient care, including:

Additionally, our iNSPIRe research initiative provides residents with early exposure to high-quality clinical research and mentorship from expert faculty researchers. Residents also participate in resident-led committees within the department, focusing on class representation, media, wellness, and simulation education.

Our trainees care for a globally-diverse patient population by rotating at the following six locations:
