Program Description

The University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) provides a one-year Cardiovascular and Pulmonary (CVP) Pathology fellowship, and a comprehensive training experience in all aspects of CVP pathology. The CVP Pathology training program provides a high volume of material that includes routine, complex and esoteric pathologic specimens related to cardiovascular, pulmonary, pleural and mediastinal diseases. Our UWMC faculty members have developed expertise in various aspects of CVP pathology, including clinic-pathological correlation, diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in lung and pleural neoplasms, molecular aspects of personalized treatment of lung cancer and molecular signaling in cardiac diseases. There are two major sources of material at this site: in-house surgical pathology specimens and outside cases. Our CVP pathology services regularly receive multiple consultation cases as well as slide reviews, which provide an invaluable resource for the fellow to be exposed to diagnostically challenging material from a diverse range of institutions, including many rare and highly unusual lesions. This exposure will allow the fellow to study multiple aspects of CVP pathology and develop sophisticated diagnostic skills, including understanding of diagnostic pitfalls, mimics, and reporting issues.

Program Aims

  • Develop appropriate skills in CVP pathology to perform independently across multiple practice settings.
  • Recognize important diagnostic pitfalls to minimize diagnostic errors in CVP pathology.
  • Develop the skills to perform as an independent clinical and/or translational researcher in the field of CVP pathology.
  • Strengthen teaching skills and experience to serve as a competent mentor to junior colleagues.
  • Learn and gain relevant experience to serve as a consultant in challenging CVP pathology cases

Requirements

Prospective candidates are anticipated to have fulfilled the training prerequisites for certification in Anatomic Pathology as mandated by the American Board of Pathology. This requirement may be waived by the Fellowship Selection Committee for exceptionally qualified international graduate applicants with ECFMG certification.

Stipend & Benefits

Appointment is for one year. Stipend and benefits are based on the schedule for residents at an equivalent level. Fellows are encouraged to apply for extramural funding if additional research training is desired.
