Education & Training

Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Program at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM), the University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Established in 1986, the fellowship is a three-year, ACGME-accredited program. 

The purpose of our comprehensive program is to train board certified pediatricians to become excellent clinical and academic pediatric intensivists. Fellows should be driven by a desire to provide excellent patient care, to develop the skills to perform relevant research in their area of interest, and to become excellent teachers of medical students, residents, ancillary personnel and future fellows. The CHAM fellowship is designed to provide opportunities to achieve all of these goals.

Clinical Experience

The majority of your clinical experience happens in our 26-bed Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU). This is a "closed unit," in which the critical care team is primarily responsible for the care of all medical and surgical patients. Patient needs span the entire range of pediatric critical care medicine, with strong representation in acute respiratory failure, septic shock, cardiothoracic surgery, solid organ transplant and neurosurgery. In addition to comprehensive education in critical care procedures and management, fellows receive extensive training in all methods of advanced therapeutics, including nonconventional respiratory support, ECMO, ventricular assist devices and renal replacement therapy.

Curriculum

Our didactic conferences include a core lecture series, case conferences, journal clubs, research presentations and quality improvement conferences. Critical care fellows also train with high fidelity simulation to enhance their team leadership and procedural skills. 

Research

Each fellow completes a mentored research project of their choosing. The mentored research experience is augmented by a departmental course that encompasses research study design and implementation, biostatistics, and grant preparation, as well as ethics, teaching and mentoring.

Recent critical care fellows have completed studies on various subjects such as:

• Intense attitudes: critical care providers’ attitudes towards severely disabled pediatric patients
• QTc prolongation in pediatric patients with diabetic ketoacidosis
• The use of near infrared spectroscopy in detecting status epilepticus
• The use of volumetric capnography in predicting readiness for ECMO decannulation
• Noninvasive ventilation in bronchiolitis: comparison of neurally-adjusted assist versus pressure-control
• Effects of oxygen therapy on status asthmaticus
• PICS in pediatric ICU patients
• Prognostic value of right ventricular pressures in pediatric ARDS
• Role of vitamin D deficiency in pediatric critical care illness

• Biomarkers in pediatric acute decompensated heart failure
