Pediatric General Surgery Fellowship

I am pleased to introduce you to the Pediatric Surgery Training Program at The John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School. The year 2005 marked the beginning of the Pediatric Surgery Training Program here at the Medical School. The goal of the training program is to prepare pediatric surgery residents to become safe, qualified and board-certified pediatric surgeons and to be the teachers, researchers and future leaders in the field of pediatric surgery.

The Division of Pediatric Surgery at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston was established in 1973 under the direction of Dr. Benjy Brooks, the first female pediatric surgeon in the country. The Division has since had three chiefs. Dr. Richard Andrassy, who is currently the Chairman of the Department of Surgery, myself, and Dr. KuoJen Tsao. The Division of Pediatric Surgery became the Department of Pediatric Surgery in 2007.

Our division is composed of outstanding clinicians and researchers whose skills and expertise cover all major areas of pediatric surgery and different fields of scientific investigation. Our faculty enjoys teaching and provides the residents with guided independence in patient care and operative experience.

The pediatric surgery residents rotate through Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center, in the Texas Medical Center during their two-year training period, which allows residents to take care of patients in different practice settings.

Thank you for your interest in our Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).  As an applicant, this is one of the most memorable times in your training as you look for a new home and pediatric surgery family to join for the rest of your career.  Our program began in 2005 and has grown in scale and complexity over the years.  The fellowship encompasses the entire spectrum of pediatric surgery.  Under the direction of 9 pediatric general surgery faculty, our trainees have experienced the highest acuity and complexity of neonatal, pediatric, and adolescent conditions.  In addition to the broad scope of general pediatric surgery, our fellows are exposed to high-end pediatric surgical subspecialty programs including fetal surgery, surgical oncology, pediatric surgical critical care, burns, ECMO, trauma, vascular anomalies, short bowel syndrome, chest wall deformities, anorectal malformations, and minimally invasive surgery.

Our goal for our fellowship is to provide the most comprehensive training program in the country in order for our graduates to be clinically prepared to start their careers from day one.  We hope you will spend some time to learn about our program and look forward to potentially meeting you during interviews.
