Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship

Overview

The Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine (DACCPM) at Massachusetts General Hospital offers an ACGME accredited Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship. The fellowship strives to recruit, mentor and train future leaders in the field of pediatric anesthesia to:

• Advance the field of pediatric anepsthesia through research and scholarly activity
• Demonstrate intellectual curiosity and engagement in learning and teaching
• Direct and manage complex care of pediatric patients

Fellows have the unique opportunity to learn from experts at Mass General, and from nationally recognized programs such as Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Shriners Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. Graduates from the Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship will gain clinical, teaching, leadership and fundamental research skills to apply to future faculty positions.

Requirements

The Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship is a 12-month program that begins after successful completion of an ACGME-accredited anesthesiology residency program.

Program Requirements

The DACCPM at Mass General follows all minimum selection criteria as delineated in the Institutional Policy of Selection. As a prerequisite for entry, all applicants for the fellowship must be a graduate of one of the following:

• American Osteopathic Association (AOA)-accredited medical school
• Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)-accredited medical school
• USMLE completion requirement for clinical trainees

Applicants must have also completed an anesthesia residency program accredited by one of the following:

• Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
• Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or CFPC-accredited residency program located in Canada

Visa Information

All who are not United States citizens or legal permanent residents must have the appropriate visa in order to receive a Mass General appointment.

Curriculum

The Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship offers a comprehensive clinical and didactic program that incorporates mentorship, lectures and simulation training to enhance the fellow’s ability to become perioperative consultants in pediatric anesthesiology. Fellows have the opportunity to collaborate and learn from colleagues at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Harvard Macy Institute, as well as our affiliating colleagues at Mass Eye and Ear, Shriners Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital.

The didactic curriculum includes:

• Case conferences
• Daily hands-on education and discussion with pediatric anesthesia faculty
• Grand Rounds series
• Journal Club
• Multidisciplinary simulation training
• Weekly multidisciplinary pediatric perioperative rounds with surgery, pediatrics and ICU
• Weekly pediatric anesthesia fellow lecture series

Career Preparation

• Teaching and clinical supervisory experience for the fellow
• Exposure to diverse pediatric research opportunities
• Formal career mentoring
• Participation in quality improvement and patient-safety projects
• Participation in the Mass General Brigham Graduate Medical Education Clinical Teaching Skills Course

Clinical Experience

The Mass General Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship offers a unique hands-on clinical experience for fellows. By partnering with colleagues at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Shriners Hospital for Children and Boston Children’s Hospital, our fellow will not only have the opportunity to learn from experts at Mass General, but also from experts in otolaryngology, ophthalmology, burn specialists and cardiac specialties at various locations.

The 12-month Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship consists of:

General Pediatric Operating Room (OR) at Mass General—six months

Fellows gain a broad understanding of the anatomical, physiological and pharmacological characteristics relevant to administering anesthesia to newborns, infants and children. The core rotations of the Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship include six months of pediatric surgery in the Mass General operating rooms and off-site locations, which includes:

• General pediatric surgery
• Neurosurgery
• Orthopedics
• Oral surgery
• Plastic surgery
• Thoracic surgery
• Urology

Pediatric Critical Care Medicine—one month

Fellows have the opportunity to become an integral part of the pediatric critical care team, and learn how to evaluate and care for infants, children and adolescents in critical condition. This pediatric critical care rotation is a combination of two weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and two weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Mass General for Children

Pediatric Acute and Chronic Pain Service—two weeks

The pediatric pain rotation at Mass General offers the fellow an educational experience in acute, chronic and cancer pain management for infants and children. The fellow spends time at Boston Children’s Hospital on the acute pain service where the emphasis is on evaluation and acute pain management of post-surgical patients and cancer patients. There are opportunities to work in the pediatric pain clinic and the acupuncture clinic at Boston Children’s. The fellow also works with our faculty at the Mass General for Children Pain clinic.

Massachusetts Eye and Ear—one month

Located adjacent to Mass General, Mass Eye and Ear is a leading hospital in otolaryngology and ophthalmology care for both pediatric and adult patients. The fellows rotate to the MEEI for one month, where they learn the complexities of anesthetizing pediatric patients undergoing airway management, otolaryngology surgeries and ophthalmology procedures.

Shriners Hospital for Children—two weeks

Located adjacent to Mass General, the Shriners Hospital for Children offers a unique opportunity to learn anesthesia care for children with acute burn injuries, chronic burn care, reconstructive plastics and airway surgery. Fellows spend two weeks focused on the perioperative and anesthetic management of children afflicted with complex burns such as thermal, electrical or chemical injuries.

Boston Children’s Hospital—two months

The Boston Children’s Hospital is a premier pediatric hospital known for its complex care of pediatric patients with congenital anomalies. This two-month cardiac anesthesia rotation is designed to provide an in-depth educational experience caring for pediatric patients with congenital and acquired heart disease. There is also an opportunity to learn to care for adult patients with palliated congenital heart lesions requiring cardiac diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Application Timeline

Application registration for the 2025-2026 academic year opens on January 8, 2024. The application deadline is May 31, 2024. Only completed applications will be reviewed. We will offer virtual interviews to qualified candidates in early 2024. Rank lists are due to the San Francisco Match on June 11, 2024 and Match Day is June 25, 2024.
