Program Mission

The primary training goal is to prepare all our graduates to be excellent clinicians, ready to enter any practice on graduation. All graduates should be able to serve as expert resources for pediatric anesthesiology and be well versed in quality improvement and patient safety methodology.

Program Aims

• To provide the training, experience, and education that will allow our fellows to become excellent clinicians and be prepared for independent practice as a consultant in the field of pediatric anesthesia.

• To teach the practice of quality improvement and patient safety through teamwork and a multidisciplinary approach as key components to the practice of pediatric anesthesia.

• To provide a relevant curriculum that assists in building a fund of knowledge necessary for the practice of pediatric anesthesiology and to obtain a passing score on the board certification exam for Pediatric Anesthesiology.

The Pediatric Anesthesia fellowship program consists of twelve months of subspecialty training following successful completion of an accredited residency program in anesthesiology. Our fellowship is an amalgamated program sponsored by the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Children’s Of Alabama (COA), and Pediatric Anesthesia Associates, PC.

The Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children has one of the busiest operating rooms in the country, providing over 22,000 anesthetics per year including every surgical subspecialty. This program provides a unique opportunity to train pediatric anesthesiologists in a setting that draws patients from across the southeast, presenting trainees with an incredible array of medical and surgical pathology.

Fellowship training is designed to develop expertise in the practice and theory of pediatric anesthesia. The program emphasizes pre-op assessment, patient education and in-depth understanding of physiology and pharmacology in the provision of patient care. Training includes rotations in pediatric critical care, pediatric cardiovascular anesthesia care, general pediatric anesthesia and pain medicine.

Our comprehensive didactic program includes departmental grand rounds, journal club, and weekly lecture series. Completion and presentation of an academic project at national/regional meetings is required.

Selection of fellows is based on applications submitted via SFMatch. Further information regarding program structure is available upon request.
