The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Chicago Medicine is proud to sponsor a one-year ACGME accredited Orthopaedic Surgery Sports Medicine Fellowship for two applicants per year. The fellowship provides a comprehensive experience in both operative and non-operative treatments for a wide spectrum of patients and conditions. The fellows will have exposure to arthroscopic, endoscopic, and open procedures of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle. In addition, the fellows also have the opportunity to gain extensive experience in arthroplasty of the shoulder and knee if desired.
Each fellow will spend half of his or her time at the University of Chicago Medical Center as well as the NorthShore University Health System in the northern suburbs of Chicago. This provides the fellows with a wide spectrum of opportunities in patient interactions, physician practices in both the private and academic sector, and different approaches to orthopaedic care.
The fellows will also have extensive exposure to athletic team coverage at the professional and collegiate levels. The fellows are joined by attending physicians in providing team coverage for the University of Chicago Varsity Athletics. Fellows have the opportunity to cover both home and away games during the football season. They also are offered opportunities to participate in training room care for the Chicago Bears during their NorthShore rotations. In addition, fellows are frequently granted opportunities to provide medical and/or surgical care to Olympic athletes along with Dr. Sherwin Ho, team physician for the Chinese Olympic Women's Volleyball team.
Throughout the year, the fellows enhance their sports medicine knowledge by participating in weekly educational conferences including didactic as well as radiology conferences. On the NorthShore rotation, the fellows are offered weekly arthroscopic simulations in the Orthopaedic Skills Lab. In addition, personalized cadaver labs are provided specific to the fellows' preferences to enhance surgical skills in complex surgeries or techniques.
The fellows will also partake in research projects. Opportunities for both clinical and basic science research are available.
