Neuropathology Fellowship

Program Overview

The overall goal of the Neuropathology Program is to provide a flexible, full-time educational program in both diagnostic and experimental neuropathology.  The Program encompasses the varied aspects of modern neuropathology, with an emphasis on academic neuropathology.  The training program is configured in a two-year format.  It is the intent and expectation of the program that all trainees will successfully pursue American Board of Pathology examination in Neuropathology.

The Neuropathology Division is composed of two full-time neuropathologists and two associated faculty from Neurosurgery and Ophthalmology.  The variety of pathologic entities seen at the University of Virginia are extensive and include the areas of neuro-oncology, pituitary pathology, neurodegenerative disorders, infections, metabolic, cerebrovascular and immunological CNS diseases, neuromuscular and ophthalmic pathology.  This reflects the tertiary nature of the UVA Medical Center and the activity and quality of the Neurology and Neurosurgery services.  In addition, materials are examined from in-house and external consultations referred by the Neuro-Oncology Center. Strong emphasis is placed on the application of special histochemical stains, immunohistochemistry, and molecular diagnostic techniques in the comprehensive evaluation of tumor specimens.
