“Our adult neurology residency creates care teams that are devoted to providing exemplary neurological care, while preparing residents to succeed as independent, expert neurologists,” says program director Melissa L. Rayhill, MD.

Our comprehensive residency will develop your expertise in cutting-edge care for an array of neurological conditions and hone the skills you need to succeed in a demanding, constantly evolving specialty.

Throughout our four-year program, you will learn from our dedicated physician-scientists, taking on increasing responsibility for patient care as well as teaching.

We prepare you well to excel on the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology certification exam and help you grow into a confident, expert neurologist.

Why Choose Our Residency?

Learn From Dedicated, Expert Faculty

You will work closely with our top-notch neurologists and specialists in all major fields of neurology, including neuropathologists, neuro-oncologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists and neuroimagers.

Our faculty have distinctive or nationally recognized expertise in several areas, including multiple sclerosis care, dementia research, child neurology, neuroimaging analysis and electrodiagnostic studies.

Each year, you will assess your progress by taking the Resident In-Service Training Examinations sponsored by the American Academy of Neurology as well as mock oral board exams. You will use your results, as well as feedback from faculty members, to further develop your knowledge and skills.

Gain Diverse Clinical Experience

As an integral member of our care team, you will learn state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment practices for neurological disorders and related conditions and diseases, including memory disorders, stroke, movement disorders, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, cancer and neuro-ophthalmologic dysfunction.

Through our broad selection of electives and specialty outpatient clinics, you will have opportunities to gain subspecialty expertise and explore your interests in multiple sclerosis, neuroimaging, neuropsychology, neurological intensive care and neurosurgery, to name a few examples.

Guided by our faculty physicians, you will care for critical, acute care and ambulatory patients in hospitals, emergency rooms, intensive care units and outpatient clinics.

You will work with patients of all ages and socioeconomic groups, from urban, suburban and rural areas, including veterans and children.

Build a Solid Knowledge Base

Beyond clinical skills, you will build a strong knowledge base in neurology-related biomedical, clinical and cognitive science, and learn to apply what you learn to exemplary patient care.

By participating in our strong didactic program, beginning in your second year, you will develop essential knowledge and professional acumen.

You will take part in diverse seminars, journal clubs, lectures, specialized conferences and grand rounds.

In the process, you will learn to quickly locate, critically evaluate and clearly present relevant information from the current medical literature.

Contribute New Knowledge to the Field

You will not just learn, but contribute new knowledge to our field.

Our neurology program is among a select few in the nation that offer a structured research experience for all residents. Guided by your research mentor, you will complete an original research project and share your results with colleagues and faculty.

We also encourage and support your participation at professional neurological meetings and research forums.

In addition, you will develop your own ideas for improving patient care by participating in a quality improvement initiative.
