UVA’s Division of Cardiovascular Medicine offers a comprehensive and accredited one- to two-year training program in interventional cardiology to fellows in their fourth or fifth year of a cardiology fellowship. Fellows work in various settings, including the cardiac catheterization laboratory, the inpatient service, and the interventional outpatient clinic, to develop technical expertise in all interventional and diagnostic cardiovascular procedures and gain broad clinical experience in the care of inpatient and outpatient interventional patients.
To supplement this clinical experience, didactic core lectures are presented throughout the fellowship to provide a fundamental knowledge base for pursuing academic interventional cardiology. Fellows are also encouraged to seek directed reading and independent research or scholarship.
The fellowship may consist of a single accredited clinical year, or a two-year experience, with the first year dedicated to research and the second to the accredited clinical year. A variety of research opportunities exist, including primary and clinical research.
Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory
The UVA Health System’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory performs over 2,000 diagnostic and 600 interventional procedures yearly for patients with coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, valvular heart disease, and congenital heart disease.
The laboratory offers the latest technology for diagnosing and treating standard and unusual cardiovascular conditions. It is involved in numerous research protocols and educational activities.
Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program Goals
The goals of this accredited clinical fellowship in interventional cardiology are to provide the fellow with the ability to:
- Understand the appropriate indications and contraindications for all interventional cardiovascular procedures as well as understand the important clinical variables determining appropriate patient selection and informed decision making.
- Evaluate coronary and peripheral angiograms for the suitability for a percutaneous interventional procedure and determine an appropriate plan to perform the procedure and to manage the patient pre- and post-procedure.
- Understand the interaction of the practice of interventional cardiology within the larger health care system and learn to practice cost-effective care while being an advocate for patients and learning ethically sound practice.
- Learn the complex health delivery systems involved in interventional cardiology and learn to work within the team which constitutes the interventional cardiology health care system.
- Communicate effectively to health care professionals, patients and their families.
- Perform all interventional procedures safely and efficiently.
- Recognize and treat all potential complications of percutaneous interventional procedures.
- Learn how to analyze their practice for needed improvement.
- Master the core knowledge base for interventional cardiology.
- Critically evaluate new technology, research and techniques in interventional cardiology and applying this information to their practice.
Our position is filled for the 2024-2025 academic year.

We are accepting applications via ERAS for one position for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Applicants may begin submitting applications to programs on July 3, 2024, and programs may start reviewing applications on July 17, 2024. We anticipate sending invitations to interview by mid-August 2024. NRMP Match Day for positions starting in July 2025 is December 4, 2024.
Please remember that qualified candidates must be:
- ABIM certified in Internal Medicine
- ABIM certified/eligible in Adult Cardiovascular Diseases
- Three years of fellowship training in general Cardiology
