The UCSF Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship program trains top physicians in a fully transdisciplinary environment to become compassionate, clinically excellent leaders in all areas of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Under the leadership of Dr. Carly Zapata and Dr. Hedieh Matinrad, we offer ACGME-accredited clinical fellowships in Adult and Pediatric Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Educational Goals:

Our curriculum employs a combination of clinical experience, didactic instruction, and structured reflection to help you learn to support the best quality of life throughout the course of an illness and to manage factors that contribute to the suffering of patients and their families. You will also develop skills in and experience with research, quality improvement, and leadership in our rapidly growing field. Throughout your year, you will:

  • Work with over two dozen board-certified palliative care physicians as well as numerous palliative care trained nurse practitioners, social workers, chaplains, and other interdisciplinary team members at seven clinical sites across one of the most diverse cities in America. Learn more.

  • Participate in over 200 hours of small-group didactic sessions designed exclusively for your class, building a foundation in the core topics of palliative medicine before moving on to advanced seminars, all while learning from passionate educators who are leaders in your field. Learn more.

  • Engage with a structured resiliency curriculum to develop skills in recognizing & integrating the personal and professional impact of your work, both to increase your long-term job satisfaction and to help you be present for your patients. Learn more.

If you are a physician with a demonstrated passion for Hospice and Palliative Medicine, we hope you will consider applying to join us.
