Psychiatry Residency Programs

Welcome to the Marshall Psychiatry Residency Programs at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine!

We have two inter-connected psychiatry residency programs! We highly encourage interested applicants to apply to both programs. Residents in each program will share many of the same experiences and will work together. The faculty are the same and there are many shared didactics. However, there are differences that distinguish each program.

The original program is entirely based in Huntington WV and has a total of 24 residents (6 residents per post graduate year). Residents rotate at a number of clinical sites including Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, the Huntington VAMC, Mildred Mitchell Bateman State Psychiatric Hospital, Marshall Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic and River Park Hospital. For more information on this program branch, please use the link here: Marshall Psychiatry Residency - Huntington

Our new rural program in Point Pleasant WV will have 16 residents total, with 4 residents per post graduate year. This program is newly accredited by ACGME and residents will have the excitement in shaping the unique rural aspects of this program. Residents will spend approximately half of their time in Huntington at the clinical rotations of our original program, and half of their time in Point Pleasant and nearby facilities. Residents will rotate in Huntington at the same clinical sites including Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington VAMC (Addiction), Mildred Mitchell Bateman State Psychiatric Hospital., and Child & Adolescent clinic at Marshall Psychiatry Clinic. The differences are that in the internship year, the non-psychiatry rotations including neurology, internal medicine/family medicine, ER, family medicine) will occur at River’s Health and Holzer Hospital. The rural program will also have its own outpatient experiences in the 3rd and 4th year in Point Pleasant.

Both programs have truly exceptional educational and clinical opportunities for the incoming psychiatry resident!

The Psychiatry Residency Programs are under the direction of the full-time psychiatry faculty of the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Our training programs are relatively small, which results in a friendly, close-knit, and cohesive group.

We, the entire faculty and staff of the Marshall Department of Psychiatry, are available to assist you in your educational endeavors. Please look over our website and let us know if you have any questions before you apply. We look forward to hearing from you!
