Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship

Training Future Leaders in Late-Life Psychiatry

Welcome to the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. This one-year clinical fellowship in geriatric psychiatry offers a rich combination of continuity and month-long experiences designed to provide psychiatrists with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders in late life with a focus on person-centered, multidisciplinary care.

The program’s diverse faculty all have clinical and research expertise in neuropsychiatric disorders of later life, with specialties ranging from geriatric psychiatry to neurology to hospice and palliative care medicine. Upon successful completion of the fellowship, fellows will be qualified to take the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology examination for certification in the subspecialty of geriatric psychiatry.

The Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship is affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Learn more about the fellowship in a welcome letter from the program director.

Training Facilities

Fellows will receive training in a variety of settings that span the typical spectrum of geriatric psychiatric care. The combination of the sites will provide fellows education and experience in serving patients from diverse backgrounds, underserved populations, veterans and patients with complex co-occurring medical, neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Ascension Seton Medical Center.

Geriatric Psychiatry fellows will spend time on three clinical services at Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin: The geriatric consultation-liaison service serves older patients with psychiatric or behavioral problems who are undergoing treatment. The electroconvulsive therapy suite provides ECT to both inpatients and outpatients at Ascension Seton Shoal Creek Psychiatry Hospital. Palliative care service provides fellows with intensive experience with the palliative care consultation team.

Austin State Hospital.

Austin State Hospital provides inpatient psychiatric care to a 38-county region in Central Texas. The hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission and certified by Medicare with 299 beds. Geriatric psychiatry fellows will be responsible for the management of geriatric psychiatry inpatients on the inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit at the hospital. Emphasis is placed on complex neurobehavioral problems and treatment-resistant patients.

Dell Seton Medical Center at UT Austin.

Dell Seton Medical Center, the primary teaching hospital of Dell Med, is the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center. Training here emphasizes interprofessional education and providing psychiatric consultation to trauma, subspecialty surgical, neurology, internal medicine and family medicine inpatient services.

Health Transformation Building.
