    We are pleased to announce initial accreditation has been granted by the ACGME for our Rural Training Program (RTP) in Family Medicine, and our first class started July 1, 2022! This program is a 1+2 RTP partnered with the Family Medicine Residency at McLaren Flint, which means the first year of training is in Flint and the second and third years of training are here in Petoskey.


    The mission of the Family Medicine Rural Training Program Residency at McLaren Northern Michigan is to provide high quality graduate medical education to meet the needs of rural medical care in northern Michigan.


    Goals of the program are to train and prepare family physicians to practice in rural Michigan who:

    • are competent to practice a full scope of family medicine independently;
    • provide continuous and comprehensive care to their patients;
    • provide the highest level of care to their patients of all genders, age groups, ethnicity and religious beliefs;
    • demonstrate meeting the six (6) core competencies and many of level 4 sub-competencies from the nineteen (19) sub-competencies and twenty (20) Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) as outlined by ACGME and the ABFM / FM Clinical Competency Committee (CCC);
    • meet professional expectations of the program;
    • continuously seek to improve their medical knowledge and clinical skills;
    • conduct research and quality improvement projects;
    • are actively involved in the training of other learners; and
    • demonstrate empathy, compassion, and tolerance for the patients they serve.

Rotations

The Family Medicine Residency Rural Training Program is on a 4-week block rotation for a total of 13 blocks in each training year.

Longitudinal Experiences

The program has longitudinal experiences built into the curriculum, which include common office procedures, specialty clinics (Diabetic Comprehensive Clinic, General Surgery Clinic, Geriatric Assessment Clinic, Injury Clinic & OB/GYN Clinic), advocacy, health system science, home visits, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), POCUS, population health, quality improvement, research, & simulation lab. Residents in the program also have experiences in caring for the uninsured at the Free Medical Clinic and by providing Street Medicine in Flint..

In addition, the program has a strong emphasis on Biopsychosocial approach to medicine for optimal patient care including: dedicated behavioral medicine faculty and fellows to assist residents in diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, longitudinal behavioral medicine curriculum including shadowing, video review, and Integrated Primary Care.

Continuity Clinic at McLaren Northern Michigan

The McLaren Northern Academic Primary Care Clinic is where resident physicians provide continuity care for their own panel of patients, assuming an increasing responsibility over their years of training.

The 5,907 square foot, newly remodeled clinic is physically connected to the hospital and includes:

  • 15 exam rooms
  • procedure room
  • preceptor room
  • resident work areas
  • faculty offices
  • break room
  • large conference room
  • Cerner EMR
