USC Epilepsy Fellowship

The departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the University of Southern California (USC) provide exceptional training and education opportunities to trainees in the Epilepsy Fellowship Programs.

The USC Comprehensive Epilepsy Center provides services across multiple centers, including Keck Medical Center of USC, Los Angeles General Medical Center, Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. The center is led by prominent clinicians and offers the latest advances in medical and surgical management, neuroimaging, technological devices, dietary therapy and other treatments. As such, trainees should expect to receive unrivaled exceptional training in this sub-specialty.

Weekly multidisciplinary epilepsy conferences and didactic lectures also provide the fellow with the educational background to develop a strong intellectual foundation for a career in epilepsy. A multitude of research opportunities, from basic science and neural network projects to clinical, neurocognitive research studies are available to the epilepsy fellow.

Epilepsy Fellowship for Neurology Trainees

Keck School of Medicine of USC offers a one-year, ACGME-accredited epilepsy fellowship. Upon completion, fellows will be eligible for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) Epilepsy subspecialty boards. Training occurs at National Association of Epilepsy Center (NAEC)-accredited Level 4 (the highest level) and Level 3 sites. The fellow’s experience, spanning adult and pediatric, includes outpatient clinic, Epilepsy Monitoring Unit with Phase 1 and Phase 2 cases, intraoperative electrocorticography, functional mapping, routine and long-term EEG, neurostimulation device treatment, and a plethora of research opportunities for the interested fellow.

Salary and benefits are provided at the USC PGY-5 level. The fellowship begins July 1 and ends June 30 the next year; accommodations to this schedule are possible.

Epilepsy Fellowship for Neurosurgery Trainees

The program affords the opportunity for an in-folded or post-graduate neurosurgical resident to gain comprehensive focused training in the medical and surgical management of patients suffering from seizure disorders. The surgical epilepsy fellow works closely with our neurosurgical faculty to master all of the surgical techniques relating to the treatment of patients with epilepsy.

With an annual epilepsy case volume of more than 150 surgical cases (and growing), our program provides a breadth of surgical opportunities and encompasses three facilities providing service to patients of all socioeconomic backgrounds. The fellow also will run a surgical epilepsy clinic in conjunction with our epileptologists, and have dedicated OR time at Los Angeles General Medical Center to manage his/her operative caseload.
