Program highlights

Ready for an innovative, diversified experience that will prepare you to be a skilled critical care clinician? See what Geisinger’s two-year ACGME-accredited Adult Multidisciplinary Critical Care Medicine Fellowship has to offer.

What sets our Critical Care Fellowship apart from other programs?

You’ll train at a major referral center that will provide you with specialized experiences in advanced cardiac care, mechanical circulatory devices, transplant — and one of the largest genetic projects in the world. You’ll also learn everything about the business of critical care in a fellowship that grounds you in ethics, communication, state-of-the-art simulation, QI/QA, education and leadership.

Our academic hospital, Geisinger Medical Center, includes:

  • One of Pennsylvania’s few dedicated, CDC-designated biocontainment units
  • Specialized closed ICUs including two medical units, a cardiothoracic/vascular unit, a Level 1 trauma center, a neuroscience unit (Comprehensive Stroke Center), an airborne unit and a dedicated surgical unit
  • A state-of-the-art simulation center where we practice procedures and run scenarios with other fellows and residents
  • An electronic ICU (eICU) platform that allows us to provide critical care services to Geisinger hospitals throughout the state

You’ll join a diverse multidisciplinary team, all board-certified in critical care medicine from fields including:

  • Internal medicine
  • General surgery
  • Trauma surgery
  • Anesthesia
  • Neurology
  • Emergency medicine

Many of our faculty hold advanced degrees in business administration or philosophy and ethics. As a Geisinger critical care fellow, you’ll also train with an excellent group of advanced practice providers and an equally outstanding team of critical care nurses and respiratory therapists. We’re lucky to have dedicated critical care pharmacists, too.

We’re more than a team. We’re true collaborators, and you’ll be a valued member from day one.

Build the healthcare delivery system of tomorrow

About Geisinger

Geisinger serves more than 1 million people in central and northeast Pennsylvania. We’ve been nationally recognized for innovative practices in quality, delivery models such as ProvenCare® and the use of an award-winning electronic medical record, Epic®. Our physician-led system has approximately 24,000 employees, including nearly 1,700 physicians, 10 hospital campuses, two research centers and a health plan with more than half a million members, all of which boost our hometown economies by $7.1 billion annually.

The main hospital campus, Geisinger Medical Center, is in Danville, a charming, historic riverside town with lots of opportunities for outdoor recreation including kayaking, cross country skiing and cycling. We’re also close to major urban centers. It’s easy to reach New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. We offer the best of both worlds — affordable, relaxing small-town life and access to the excitement and cultural experiences in big cities.

Our culture

We’ve created a culture of safety and respect, and we make sure our critical care fellows have a voice in our system through service on committees. Our Critical Care Fellowship program director and fellowship coordinator are approachable, and we foster a strong sense of camaraderie.

Like our larger health system, our Critical Care Fellowship also prizes diversity. Our faculty hold positions on ethics, quality and safety and diversity councils. Geisinger supports diverse spiritual preferences. Our chapels are open to everyone for prayer or meditation, and we offer a dedicated Muslim prayer room.

Of course, we also continually strive to improve patient care and we value each team member’s expertise and contributions toward meeting that goal.
