- Completed application form through ERAS, CV, transcripts, personal statement, three letters of recommendation, medical Student performance evaluation (Dean’s Letter).
- USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 scores, Step 2 scores can be provided after the application dead line.
The Detroit Medical Center will sponsor J-1 visas only. We do not sponsor H-1B visas for foreign nationals.
Our training sites within the Detroit Medical Center complement each other, in that each provides valuable clinical experiences to add to the residents’ training. These include:
Detroit Medical Center provides a variety of experience to our residents with adult and pediatrics anesthetics, administered by our anesthesia providers (anesthesiologists, residents, and nurse anesthetists). On an average day, there are more clinical opportunities than there are residents.
Research
The resources of Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center are available to help expand our research efforts. Our faculty are actively involved in a variety of clinical research projects. Our residents are strongly encouraged to participate in our projects, have the chance to co-author abstracts and articles, and present them at national conferences.
Didactics
As part of their training, residents actively participate in daily didactic morning sessions journal clubs, research conferences, mortality and morbidity conferences, and perioperative case discussions. We encourage our residents to attend national conferences (ASA, IARS, PGA, SAMBA, SCCM), and provide them with financial allowances for that purpose if they are the presenters.

Welcome to the Detroit Medical Center Anesthesiology Residency Program! We appreciate your interest in our program and would love for you to join our team. The goal of the training program at the DMC is for you to become a skilled, confident anesthesiologist that will be well prepared for fellowship or practice.
A little bit about us. We are a medium sized residency program with 12 residents per year located in the heart of Detroit, Michigan. You will complete a diverse intern year followed by three years of anesthesia training at DMC affiliated hospitals. Our intern year is well integrated into our program as a whole. You will have the opportunity to form close bonds with senior residents and attendings during your surgical intensive care unit, pain medicine, and pre-admission testing rotations. Interns are also welcome to take part in journal clubs and socials, so once you join us in the OR as a CA-1 year, you will already feel like you are a part of our anesthesia family. Anesthesia bootcamp month is during June of your intern year. Bootcamp is unique to our program. You’ll step into the OR paired with a senior resident and attending to begin mastering your clinical anesthesia skills. A thorough didactic series on the basics of anesthesia also runs during this month, which allows for a seamless transition into the OR as a CA-1 resident.
Our case exposure is abundant, and you will far exceed the minimum ACGME requirements for graduation. We have a regional anesthesia program with fellowship trained attendings leading the way. Our high-risk obstetrics population and the pediatric anesthesia exposure at Children’s Hospital of Michigan provides excellent preparation for academic or private practice. We have a high volume of critical cardiac patients that include Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) as well. Weekly didactic sessions and oral board prep help residents to continue their knowledge base and prepare them well for BASIC, ADVANCED, and oral boards.
We have a close-knit residency program with invaluable faculty who care deeply about the success of each resident. They not only serve as great instructors, but also mentors to help you achieve your personal and career goals. Many of our residents go on to match with competitive fellowships in Cardiac, Critical Care, Pain Medicine, Regional, and Pediatrics at prestigious institutions.

Before commencing any research activity students will be required to complete The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) online Course in The Protection of Human Research Subjects. https://www.citiprogram.org/default.asp?language=english
Depending on the project requirements, research students may be involved in duties such as:
- Performing extensive literature searches and/or reviews
- Collecting study data from sources such as medical databases, patient charts, simulator programs, etc.
- Assisting in conducting patient questionnaires/surveys
- Assisting with patient informed consent
- Collating and analyzing study data
- Assisting in the preparation of study results (conference presentations, posters, publications)
*In cases where students do not have access to private secured hospital patient databases, security access may be facilitated following Anesthesiology Department and DMC security approval.
In addition to course related evaluations/credits, each medical student involved in a research project can receive a written research participation evaluation from the Department of Anesthesiology.
