Residents, wellness, and community

Residency can be stressful. We are committed to creating an environment which promotes diversity, is inclusive, and prioritizes your wellness. In addition to formal training to this end, the program coordinates wellness events. Moreover, our residents (categorical and preliminary) are often described as “tight-knit” and the culture “like a family”. Many choose to live in the campus-affiliated housing option, Barr Tower, further amplifying the familial atmosphere. Generally, social events are frequent amongst the residents and faculty.

Chairman's message

Welcome to the Department of Internal Medicine at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Thank you for your interest in Masonic Medicine and our Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. Our goal is to provide you a learning environment that continually stimulates your curiosity, broadens your experience with complex disease and develops your skills for lifelong learning.

Let's take a quick look at the environment and culture here at Advocate Illinois Masonic. We are a part of one of the top 12 not-for-profit health systems in the country. With over 75,000 physicians, nurses and team members, Advocate Health (AAH) is a national leader in clinical innovation, health outcomes, consumer experience and value-based Care. Our system serves nearly 3 million patients annually in Illinois and Wisconsin. Our trainees benefit from this rich infrastructure with a depth of talented generalist and specialist, in addition to a wealth of opportunity to care and learn from a largely diverse socio-economic patient population.

AAH is engaged in hundreds of clinical trials and research studies and is nationally recognized for its expertise in Cardiology, the Neurosciences and Oncology. In addition, AAH has contributed 2.1 billion in charitable care and services to its communities in 2018. This is the rich culture of care and community you would be joining.

Innovation is the hallmark of our mission; to constantly develop and study new ways to educate our Resident Physician Trainees and Teaching Faculty. From our weekly Simulation Lab Training, to the Modeled X + Y Ambulatory Educational Curriculum, you will experience medical education through real time simulation, problem based learning, and bedside skills training. We see the recent pandemic as an opportunity to creatively restructure the multiple daily conference experience with online participation from multiple subspecialties. All has enriched to a greater degree the educational experience.

A unique recent feature of our Residency Training experience is the addition of Lifestyle Medicine to our Categorical Curriculum. Completion will allow our graduates to become Board Certified by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. Our Success in the Internal Medicine Program is based upon your success. With this as the foundation of our educational mission, our boutique program looks to mentor, develop, and focus our energies toward your long-term career goals.

We invite you to take a deeper look at all that we have to offer and wish you continued success as you move into the most important years of your post graduate education.

Regards,

Steven R. Potts DO FACP
